... And I Lived Happily Ever After

My assistant had every intention of posting this on Tuesday, but you know what they say about good intentions ...didn't happen! Many of my old friends know my story, but my new friends may not. Here's how it all began ...

Originally posted 9/11/10

Now, I know this is a very sad and tragic day with many painful memories of innocent lives lost …but one happy thing happened, nine years ago today, Mama decided to adopt me.

Nine years ago I was abandoned like trash, probably used for breeding, but who knows. If you want to read the sad details, you can read them here.  But I want to keep things happy today.

I was rescued by Red Door Animal Shelter a small no-kill facility on the far north side of Chicago. As always, the shelter was super crowded so Mama agreed to foster me for a few days. She brought me home on September 10th and I hid for the first twelve hours.

We all know what happened the following morning … Mama was watching the live coverage when she looked up and saw my sad face peaking out from behind the couch. She knew in that moment that we belonged together – it took me longer to see the light.  I was traumatized and in sad shape, but she never gave up on me.

Here's what a little love can do

BEFORE - The world is a mean, scary place!

AFTER - I am as happy as a clam. Ain't life grand!

When I first arrived at the shelter, the vet estimated that I was 3 or 4, which would make me about 13 today!  We will never know my actual birthday, but Mama chose September 11th as a reminder that even in the darkest hour, there is always hope.

Red Door is a small, but mighty shelter with a heart of a gold. I am only one of thousands of cats, dogs, and rabbits that this amazing shelter has rescued, rehabilitated, and re-homed over the last 10 years!

Cheers to happy endings!

Awwww! What a sweet post to help us remember that good things can come out of every bad situation! I am so glad you told us your adoption story! It was no wonder that you hid behind the couch for so long but I'm glad you chose just the right moment to come out from hiding. You probably made your mom feel safe while watching the terrible 9-11 news. See? You both needed each other and now you are in a forever home! Happy barkday, Pip!

You may not know the song from Rags to Riches (my mom is older than dirt) but she says it is your life story. There was a dignified, dapper mandog hiding in that body!!! Happy 13th

Happy Gotcha Birthday, Handsome PIP!

I'm sure a lot of good things happened on 9/11 but so many were overshadowed that day.

Just look at you! You went from being a scruffy little boy to being a handsome man decked out in a tuxedo, sipping champagne, and loved to pieces by your mom. Proof that good things did happen that day!

Hi Mr. Pip! Thanks for stopping by my bloggie - I can tell already that we will be great friends! On a day of sad memories, you are a reminder of all of the hope and joy that exists in the world! And 13! Wow! My little big sister TaiChi was at least 20 (she was a rescue, too, and her age was a bit indeterminate) when she left us, so by my calculations, you've got a lot of years ahead of you! Happy Gotcha Day - enjoy that champagne!

Happy Gotcha/Birthday Pip. You sure got a smart mama there for choosing today to celebrate. Hope you get lots of hug's & kisses & some tasty treats. Finally that awful heatwave has ended. I love Autumn in Chicago & just pray it stays this way. Funny how when your young you live for hot summer days. With age I now dread seeing the big 90 in the weather report.
