My Feral Friend Buddy Needs Help!

WARNING GRAPHIC PICTURES BELOW!!!

I'm sorry I've been missing in action this week, but I've been on an important rescue mission. We used to care for a feral cat named Buddy. Even though he lived outside and never let us get too close, we considered him a member of our family. We built him a house in our yard and made sure he was well fed. But a few years ago, he disappeared. My mom searched for him, but never found him.

Well, last Saturday morning we went out the backdoor and guess who was sitting there waiting for breakfast - BUDDY!! We were SO HAPPY to see him, but we quickly realized something was wrong.

As you can see, he has a large wound on the side of his neck. We assume he was attacked by a raccoon, dog, or coyote (yes, we have them in the city). From what we can tell, it doesn't look like a fresh wound, but must be very painful. Unfortunately, he doesn't let us get very close to him so we are not sure what we are dealing with ...

To make the long story short, we have spent the last week trying to coordinate a rescue mission for Buddy. We have an appointment at Treehouse Animal Foundation this coming Thursday. If we can trap him, they will treat his injury and assess whether he can be released again. Treehouse was one of the first cageless cat shelters in the country and now has two locations in Chicago.

We tried to trap Buddy years ago and never had much luck. Please keep your paws crossed that we can catch him and get him the help he desperately needs. Buddy has been gone for at least 2 years and we have to believe that he returned for a reason ...

Oh, and tomorrow is my Gotcha Day! I have been with my family for 10 years! You can read more about my rescue here. Please help me celebrate by sending your very best vibes, prayers, good wishes to poor Buddy.

  1. Poor little Buddy - that wound looks incredibly painful. We certainly hope that Treehouse can help you help Buddy. We have three former ferals here ... so what they are doing is a cause very close to our heart.

  13. Pip we hope you can trap Buddy easily and he can recover from that nasty wound. Your family is so kind to have cared for him, he knew he'd get help when he came back to you.
    Happy Gotcha Day for tomorrow!

PS: Our Mum says a drop trap might be useful if Buddy has not shown willing going into a cage type trap :)

  14. PPS: Tinned pilchards are really good for tempting ferals cats into traps. They are really stinky and yummy :)

  15. Poor Buddy....we are purraying with all our might that he can be trapped and get much needed treatment....he is a mighty handsome dude!!!!!!!

Love to y'all and may you be greatly blessed for helping Buddy.

  16. Poor Buddy. That is amazing that he came back after two years. We are sending ton of purrs that you can catch him. See if you can get him in a carrier if you have one that is big enough. A tiny one won't work. I feed the feral cats at the door of the carrier, then work the dish back. Walk behind him so he gets used to you being back there. He probably will run out at first.
Anyway, we are crossing our paws that you can get him. A drop trap is wonderful too. Keep us posted.

We are so sorry about Buddy and we hope and pray you can get help in attending to his wound...we know you will be very careful but Mom says to be cautious 'cause some folks in our city were trying to catch a feral cat and were attacked...he was found to have rabies....and they are having to go through some very difficult treatments.

  18. Mom's concern is that since he has a wound he might have been bitten by a wild animal...we are truly sorry he has been injured and hope you are able to safely trap him.

  19. Oh. My. Dog. That looks so owie. Mom had good luck trapping ferals with a drop trap wot she made. It usually werks when the regular traps dussn't werk but you has to man it by holding a string and pulling the string when the kitteh goes in. It falls ofur the top of the kitteh so it's not something they has to walk into. Mom made it herself and it cost about $40 in materials. She has all the instrukshuns written out fur how to make it if'n you be interested. If so, let me know and I send it to you. shepshawnee at cs dot com

  44. I sure hope you manage to trap Buddy and get him help. We have some cats that come and go in the garden too. They are usually quite trusting but some have been through a lot to let a human come close.

You could try what Marg did... she has a wonderful way of trapping ferals with the dog carrier.. and some stinky food in the carrier.

Your gotcha day? oh wow.. i got to get my party suit on :D
