Run Free, Buddy

It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of Buddy, the injured feral cat who reappeared in my yard last week (after being gone for two years).

Buddy's injuries were horrific, much worse than I could have ever imagined. His wound was extremely deep (the vet described it as the size of a human fist), infested with maggots, and his skin was peeling in layers. Because of the depth and severity of the wound, the vet does not believe it was caused by another animal. His neck was sliced by something (maybe a fence or broken window) or possibly by some poor excuse for a human being. He was surely in agony and it is a wonder he survived as long as he did.

There are thousands of stray and feral cats in Chicago. Many view them as nameless, faceless shadows in the night. But Buddy had a name and people who cared about him. And although he never let me touch him, I am grateful that he returned so that I could help ease his pain.

Buddy was humanely euthanized at ten this morning. I am heartbroken, but comforted that he is no longer suffering. Run wild and free, dear Buddy.

  3. That is just so incredibly sad. Poor Buddy. But even if they couldn't save him, you still did so much to try. And his agony could have gone on for a lot longer if you hadn't trapped him and sought help. He was one tough kitty. RIP, Buddy - we know you are happy now.

  6. I'm so sorry to hear about Buddy. But if there is anything positive about such a sad story it is that Buddy did not die alone and anonymous on a cold street. Instead, he was surrounded by people who loved and cared for him, who were doing everything possible to ease his suffering. Buddy's life was not an easy one, but at least, in the end, he was loved. Thank you for being Buddy's angels.

  7. I am sad too. And I agree with OP PACK. I was going to say the same thing,, that he came back to you,.... his heart was crying help me find the angels, lead me to them, and you did.
Your heart is sad,, but you did the kindest thing.
Buddy is now being held by the angels.. and is being loved , by a kind of love he never knew....
and all our love for him,,, he feels that too.
