And You Are?

It's a bird …

It's a plane …

It's ?????
________________________________________________________________

Anyone else confused about Ruby's name? We introduced her as Ruby Lou, but her header says Ruby Rose. Here's the scoop - she came with the name Ruby. She knows her name so we didn't want to change it completely … instead we decided to alter her name slightly to represent her new life with us.

Confused? We are, too. Please feel free to weigh in on Ruby Rose vs. Ruby Lou (or make other suggestions) ? If you adopted a dog, did you keep her original name or change it?

  1. Wow.. she sure flies in the snow!!

  2. Hailey and Zaphod are the names their foster parents gave them. We kept them. I rarely call them Hailey and Zaphod, it is more like Lee, Lee-Lee, Meep, Phod, Phodrick, Rick.

I can't pick between Ruby Rose or Ruby Lou - Rose seems more elegant and Lou seems more playful.

I think it is Ruby Lou in the snow!

  3. Ruby Lou or Ruby Rose.. she's Ruby! Ruby Lou is quite cute..
With Dommy.. we kept his name as he knew his name and had it for 4 years before we adopted him.
With Chachi... we renamed her Nana but we still keep calling her Chachi :D but with dogs.. they kinda recognise your voice and tone.. so whatever you call them.. they will still come to you. Dommy ended up with many names... short and long and funny.. he comes. With this new girl.. she still do not know COME yet *LOL*
btw... Love the pics of Ruby in the snow.. she is indeed a snow bunny!!

  7. We adopted Duffy when he was two years old after our friend who owned him , died.I think we could have changed his name (slowly but surely) but kept it out of respect for our friend.I think if you gave Ruby a "pet name" she would eventually respond to it. All our gang pretty much go by their pet names rather than their given names. I like both Ruby Lou (playful) and Ruby Rose (elegant) but prefer Ruby Lou slightly.Hope you got through this mouthful of words :)

    Gosh she is soooo adorable!!Truly!

  8. I must admit....Ruby reminds me of the Kenny Roger's song...."Ruby - don't take your love to town" Ruby-lou also was the name of a ragdoll in an old tv series called Andy Pandy. For some reason she doesn't seem like a Ruby to me....she is so sweet and happy and look at her loving that snow. She reminds me of a Poppy - she popped up at the right time, popped into your hearts and popped into your life perfectly :) It isn't hard to change a dogs name....heck my guys answer to about 5 different names each....but I think we like Ruby just by itself. Did you know dogs respond better to names with y or ie on the end.....which is why so many dogs end up with nic names. kind of like you probably use call Pip - pippy sometimes.

  9. Hi Kristen!
When we adopted our cats from Winnie's Wish (http://dogsandcats.typepad.com/) we kept the cats names: Luna, Percy, and Golden...but since they did not come with middle names...we were thrilled to give them some. So...Luna Lovegood, Percy O'Malley (although he is called Percy Paws more often...) and Golden Autumn. So...if you like Ruby Lou...go with it. I personally like Ruby Lou.
    Much Love,
    Mindy :)

  11. We like Ruby Lou the best. With your kitty being Rosie we would worry that they could get confused when you are calling them if they both had rose in their names.

Either way you are super cute and quite the snow dog.

  12. Hmmmm.....I absolutely love RUBY ROSE!

And for name changes: Our last three newcomers in the last year were names Autumn, Shelly, and Patty. Autumn kept her original name because she's older and knew it well although her Daddy calls her SHOCKA-ZULU (?????) She answers to both names. BOL

Shelly and Patty were both under a year old. We changed Shelly to Shelby because my human sissy is named Shelly. Can't have two of those because sissy would always come running when Mom passed out the Milk Bones.

And Patty's AKC name on her original registration was PEPPERMINT PATTY. Mom didn't care too much for PATTY so she was renamed PEPPER.

That's my story and I's stickin' to it. :)

  20. We loves the name Ruby Lou!

We have a friend who would change her adopted doggies names to something different but sounded similar. We don't recommend this for you though, the only things that are like Ruby are Gooby, Booby, Dooby...

  21. We like Ruby Rose, 'cos roses are lovely and fragrant whereas, to British ears, Lou sounds like loo which is slang for toilet and thus connotes something a lot less fragrant….

  25. We like them both, but you will probably find one rolls off YOUR tongue easier or more often than the other.
Mom had decided my name would be Greta, but my Official name came later when she realized they would call me Greta Pug a lot and say "you little munchskin!" Soo my official name is Greta Pug Munchskin!

  26. Ruby Lou is super cute!! Makes me just want give her a big hug! (>^.^<)
I've always gotten my pets from family members or neighbors, but if I ever adopted then I'd probably do what you did: keep the name AND give them a middle name. :)

  27. Well Mabel LOU thinks it should be Ruby LOU! It's a good name!!! And it rhymes with lot of words!!!

My dogs have all come with a name... oddly enough, I like using M as a first name because the first rott in our family was Mato...it's my way of honoring her. But oddly, all my girls CAME with an M name!!!

Milly was MEDUSA! Ick! HOW could you name such a sweet dog that! I decided that was abusive and it had to change.

Maggie May's name was Missy.... which fit her but... I felt like if they didn't love her enough to keep her... she couldn't love the name they gave her.

Mabel LOU's name was Midnight... and it did not fit. She had been adopted seven times and had been called lots of names... mostly bad words!

My theory is... new name for a new life. I want my baby to associate GOOD things with their name!
I always make up a song using their name and I sing it often in the first few weeks. They are smart...they learn.

    ReplyDelete
  28. All ^^^ that being said... Mabel has a million nicknames - some even given to her by friends. She responds to ALL of them!

    Just some of her names:
Punkin, Peanut, Fancy Pants, Queen Bitch, Tout, Sweet Pea, Lou, Lou Lou Bell, Loula.

    They respond to your tone...

    ReplyDelete
  29. I like them both, but I would probably just call her Ruby.

Samson Says: A Rose, she's a Rose, she is so sweet there in the snow. I better say no more or my Gracie may misunderstand if she reads this.

Me: Yes, Samson, one girlfriend is enough, but I do agree, Ruby is a sweet little dog that everyone in Blogville will love, for sure.

  34. I love Ruby Rose as a name. It suits her.

When we adopted Shyla at 9 months old, we changed her name. We did it by calling her by a combined name to start with. Her old name was Rogue, so we called her "Shyla Rogue" for a while. However, it didn't take long for her to answer to Shyla. I'm not sure how much her name had actually been used with her before we adopted her. The same might be true for Ruby.

She sure looks like she's having fun in the snow!

    ReplyDelete
  35. That looks like a lot of fun!

And my vote is for Ruby Rose because it sounds very pretty together!

    ReplyDelete
  36. We love the name Ruby...and we kinda prefer Rose over Lou. But she's a cutie no matter what you call her. :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Well my two cents worth is you already have a Rosie and Ruby Lou is quite catchy. My vote is for Ruby Lou. The initials RR would be like rut row.
    Thanks for being a friend

  38. I think I like Ruby Lou since it's playful and kinda sounds like Scooby Do! I adopted Riley, but the only name she had was given to her by the rescue when they brought her and her brother and sister up from downstate Illinois, so I don't think she really was ever called a name before on a regular basis. Those snow pics sure are adorable!!

  44. Ruby Rose is a very pretty name for a pretty lady. I vote Ruby Rose.
    But.
But Mommy's very special friend who passed over the human's Bridge at the beginning of this year was named Lou. She used to call us several times a day, and she was a wonderful friend to Mommy. She was a very special person--even though she liked Calico kitties especially. So maybe Mommy would like Ruby Lou.
I still say Ruby Rose is prettier!

  45. ps. I was given the name Quinn by the shelter, and Mommy fell in love with me AND my name.

  49. Well we likes Ruby Rose, we thinks you can change her name to something you likes and that fits her personality if you aren't happy with it. We didn't know Annie Tuiren's name when she first came to live here so we gave her a name, then we meet her former person and her name used to be Gracie. She didn't respond to Gracie any better then she did Tuiren and we liked Tuiren better so we kept the Tuiren.

  50. we think either name is great, I love the name Ruby, I am partial to Ruby Rose I think but like them both! Dakota was originally "Tanner" I hated that name. I had always loved the name "Dakota" I looked up the meaning and when I found out it meant "trusted friend" that was it! That became his name.

  51. Mes likes the name Ruby Lou!

  52. Well, you asked for input and looks like you gots plenty of it. But, I will gives you my 2 paws worth anyway! When I gots left at the animal shelter my name was Fendi. The LB, who volunteers at said shelter, spent lots of time with me cuz I was majorly scared and shut down. She eventually adopted me and decided I needed a new name because she didn't like that I was named after a designer handbag! So hers named me HoneyBuzz. Thing is, I was kinda stuck on the name Fendi and would gets all kinds of happy when she called me it. So hers conceded and decided to call me Fendi HoneyBuzz. Now hers mostly calls me Fenny... or Goose... or Mother Goose... or Da Fats Little Hobbits... or Fenda-Linda-Loo... the list goes on and on and on...

  56. We changed Monty's name from Marty - he kind of came to it, but neither one of us was happy with Marty. We completely changed Harlow's name since she didn't seem to realize we were talking to her. I like how Ruby Lou rolls smoothly. Have you tried calling them out? Sometimes that helps us make the final decision.

  57. I like ruby rose

I haven't adopted a dog but I did start calling my dog a different name after a few years (in conjunction with her real name) this nickname suited her personality more and she ended up answering to both names

My niece did the same thing with her dog

  60. So that's why! I'm fine with Ruby Rose but Ruby Lou sounds fine too!

Now I'm confused! I like Ruby Rose because it sounds like a character from a fairy tale!
